Before a single slab is cut, someone has to measure your space precisely. That visit is called a template, and it is one of the most important steps in any countertop or surface project.
What a template is
A template captures the exact shape of your cabinets and walls, including the corners that are not perfectly square, so your surface is cut to fit the room you actually have. At Hendricks & Woodford we do our own templating, so the people who measure your space are the same team that fabricates and installs the finished work.
How to prepare
- Cabinets installed and secured. Base cabinets should be in place, level, and fastened before we template.
- Appliance and fixture specs on hand. Sink, faucet, and cooktop details determine the cutouts, so have the model information ready or the items on site.
- Clear countertops. Remove items from the surfaces we will be measuring.
- Decisions made, or at least narrowed. Edge profile, overhang, backsplash height, and seam placement all affect the template.
- Someone present. Plan to be there, or have a decision-maker available, so questions can be answered on the spot.
What we will talk through
Templating is also the moment to confirm the details that are easy to overlook on a drawing. We will look at where seams will fall, how a vein pattern will run across your layout, how the edge will look at corners, and how the surface will meet your walls, backsplash, and fixtures.
After the template
Your design, your selections, and your measurements come together for fabrication. We will walk you through the schedule at the visit, because timing depends on the material, the project, and the calendar.
